Sylvia Beach Hotel featuring Widler Wenzel small paintings

November 21 to January 19 at the Sylvia Beach Hotel in Newport, Oregon I will be exhibiting over thirty of my vignette acrylic paintings. http://www.sylviabeachhotel.com/ These works were made while living several months each year for the last three years at Coyote Rock RV and Marina Park on the Alsea River, Kernsville, Lincoln City. While my husband mowed the fields, I painted a bluebird watching and waiting. Today the hawk was gone and the bluebirds were out feeding. There was much going on at home. Airing out the motor coach, bookkeeping, volunteer work. With so much happening at home, I wonder when we will think about our next RVing trip.

Quick sketches of Red Cliffs in mole skin pocket book The difficulty we had on our first long trip was balancing Don's fishing with my painting. One of our stops when we first arrived appeared like a total empty place for my painting. It was a high bluff above Cebolia Lake in Arizona. The landscape stretched out to the horizon with tiny mountains in the distance. At sunset we heard the wild burroes and coyotes. When I went for a walk alone I was frightened out of my mind when I found myself in a swarm of killer bees who paid me no attention thankfully.
Here I discovered that I can find interesting and rewarding subjects anywhere. Underfoot I found a nature made mosaic of rocks of all descriptions. The camp site looked like

it had never been used by another human except for a circle of dust with some found rocks deliberately placed unlike nature could do alone. An artist had stayed here before and left the place without leaving more than his feelings expressed with the selection of rocks and how they interacted with sun and weather. Like that artist I tried to leave the camp as I had found it with an additional arrangement of rocks. As for my painting experience there, it went very well and is posted earlier.


What I like about our 2004 Winnebago Sightseer Motor Coach is that I had enough art supplies to last two months and my husband had an eight foot inflatable pontoon boat an all his fishing gear and we still had considerable empty storage space.

Setting sun at the flat table a mile from Cebolia Lake. To reach this high nole we had to build up the road with big stones to repair where it had washed out. This was taken near the camp ground at Canyon of Fire, Nevada.

I always have an eye out for dragon shapes in the landscape and some of my paintings on this trip have a dragon shapes I think.

A Day in Our Motor Coach at the Oregon Coast

My prize of the day is "Breaker Foam Dragon" - a break through for me. I have been painting over and over "Sea Foam Dragons" not getting the feeling I want of playful happiness. "Breaker Foam Dragon" is mixed media with interference and regular acrylic paints on a 12 ' square cradled board.

At 7:00 A M my husband served me oatmeal with raisins. He then busily prepared to go fishing while I have hardly finished breakfast tea. Our windows were steamed and dripping wet. I couldn't wipe them enough times, so I turned off the heat and opened the windows to a beautiful sunny day. I took a few photographs of the oil slick on the marina. Did chores.
9:15 AM I left to do grocery shopping in Lincoln City, Price and Pride Grocery Store.
10:45 AM, I was back at the motor coach . As I was setting up my paints I waved at my husband as he trolled by. I moved the crab pots on and around the table to make room to paint outdoors. I just started painting and it was noon.
12:00 my husband came back for lunch. We had Hebrew Kosher low fat hot dogs and honey crisp apples.
1:00 We walked Gleneden Beach. A sick seal was on the beach yesterday according to another beach walker. We saw the remains of a seal pup. Mostly the beach was bare except for course sand with small grey pebbles.
2:45 my husband made pop corn and we broke out the lawn chairs for the first time since we came in mid September. We soaked up the 72 degree weather.
3:00 I set up my painting again on the outdoor table and had the best most successful painting session. My memory was fresh from our beach walk and the little drawing I did on my wood block when we first walked onto the beach.
4:00 I started dinner. Roma tomatoes on local lettuce from the Barking Dog Organic Produce Farm. A slice of bread with toasted cheese and big shrimp.
5:30 Finished up my blog
This evening I will enjoy the mild weather outdoors and at 8:00 PM my husband and I will watch Dancing With the Stars.
My day is the best day in awhile. It has been so wet and gray. The fishing was poor and most of the other Rvs have drove away leaving the resort very quiet and peaceful.

Riparian Environment

It is raining and we have moved our motor coach to the water's edge. I have been looking more than painting. These are mostly ones that have new beginnings. Just below us is a cormorant diving for small fish. I have a start of the cormorant on the one on the left. I am pleased with the freshness and simplicity of the painting. so then loking at the others I want to make them as direct and fresh so I painted fresh strokes of movement in them risking failure. Sometimes I think it would be better if I had the materials to just start fresh new ideas.

Crows' Flight at Full Moon and Seagull Paintings

At dawn two crows flew towards the east and the full moon. Then the fog thickened. I used some iridescent Golden gold acrylic to make atmosphere. The brightness of the moon needed impact achieved by pushing the sky to a darker shade with iridescent mists. Also finished a seagull started at Coyote Rock on the Siletz. The seagull was looking up at the fisherman waiting for scraps of salmon fins. My husband and I are staying in a motor coach for a few weeks so he can fish and I can paint. I found a good place to photograph in the felt lined storage cabinet in our motor coach basement. These two paintings stand up on their own because they are 5 by 7 inches and an inch and 7/8th deep. My husband and I crafted these deep cradled boxes so I can paint watercolor or acrylics. All of these boxes will be varnished with matte UV protective medium.

New Beginnings

I am happy that the surgery is behind me and that I am recovering. My husband also had a lot to endure waiting for my surgery that lasted nine hours. And then he has been nursing me the past two days. I came home 26 hours after the surgery. I am doing really well and will soon be posting paintings from our adventures in the motor home. Only it will take maybe six weeks before I can lift any weight more than 6 pounds. Thanks for all your well wishes and support.

Nesting in a Painter's Motor Coach

When I am recuperated from surgery, my husband and I will go traveling in our Winnebago Coach. RVing is new to us and we are busy customizing our new home. I am preparing a soft sided cooler on wheels for my art supplies. Everyday will bring a chance to paint either inside in my passenger seat studio or outdoors. Managing my painting with as little impact on the environment, I may paint with acrylics on acrylic that I pour and dry. I do not want to use wood stretcher bars and discard cardboard and shrink wrap. Shrinking plastic is not good for the environment. The challenge will be the presentation. Wouldn't it be a kick to recycle throw away trash into something attractive and meaningful.

Thank you Martha Marshall for your comment. Yes low tech pencils and watercolors are good for traveling. I am open and appreciate suggestions on being an artist on wheels.
